Rules without the guesswork
How to play Squaredle
Squaredle is a word search played by tracing connected letters across a square grid. The goal is not to submit every dictionary word: complete the puzzle by finding its Required words, while extra recognized words are recorded as Bonus.
Squaredle rules at a glance
Begin on any letter tile in the grid.
Move horizontally, vertically, or diagonally to the next touching letter.
Trace at least 4 letters and release to check the word. A tile cannot be reused in the same word.
What counts as a Squaredle word path?
Each letter must touch the next letter in the path. All eight surrounding directions count, so a word can turn corners and move diagonally. A path cannot jump across the board, and you cannot visit the same square twice while spelling one word. The same tile can be used again in a different word.
Required and Bonus words
Recognized words and completion targets are deliberately separate. Every published puzzle stores a fixed Required list and a fixed Bonus list. A playable word becomes Required when it is core-valid under this site’s SCOWL policy, reaches the configured word-frequency threshold, and is not on the Required-only exclusion list. Every other recognized playable word on that board is Bonus and does not advance the Required progress meter.
There is no difficulty-based cherry-picking after that rule runs: every eligible playable word is Required. A word can still be perfectly valid English and remain Bonus because it is less common, outside the core SCOWL tier, a higher-variant form, or intentionally excluded from being mandatory.
Which English spellings are accepted?
The word list on this site is built from a pinned SCOWL lexicon and includes mainstream American, British/Oxford, Canadian, and Australian spellings. The runtime policy recognizes lowercase English words from 4 to 16 letters. Proper-name-only forms, abbreviations, word fragments, and other nonword categories are filtered out.
Regional membership by itself does not decide whether a word is Required or Bonus. Familiarity is considered separately when puzzles are generated, so a common spelling can be a Required candidate while a rarer or more regional form is more likely to remain Bonus.
Why might a word not be accepted?
There are two different checks. First, the letters must form a legal path on the current board. Second, the completed spelling must exist in this site’s recognized lexicon. A dictionary entry elsewhere is not automatically proof that it belongs to this word list, and another Squaredle site may make a different decision because it uses a different lexical source or editorial policy.
Squaredle tips and strategy
Good Squaredle solving is mostly about finding productive parts of the board before chasing individual words. On a 4×4 grid, the four interior tiles each touch eight neighbors, edge tiles touch five, and corners touch only three, so the middle usually offers more ways to extend a path.
Interior letters give you the most possible next moves. Use them to test promising vowel-and-consonant combinations before working outward.
Pairs such as TH, CH, ST, and common endings such as -ER, -ED, and -ING can expose several related words from the same area.
After finding a word, check whether a neighboring letter can add a prefix, suffix, plural, or longer form without breaking the path.
Bonus words can also be useful clues: even when they do not move the Required progress meter, they reveal letter clusters and paths worth revisiting.
Daily, Unlimited, Express, and Weekly
- Daily Squaredle gives everyone on this site the same 4×4 puzzle for the date shown above the board.
- Squaredle Unlimited keeps the 4×4 rules but lets you continue into more boards without waiting for tomorrow.
- Squaredle Express uses a smaller 3×3 grid for a shorter round while keeping the same adjacency rules.
- Squaredle Weekly is a harder shared 4×4 challenge that stays available for the week.
- Squaredle Solver lets you enter a 3×3 or 4×4 board and inspect every recognized word path.
How Squaredle hints work
Tap Hint to see the first two letters of a randomly chosen unfound Required word, with the rest masked (for example, ON***). A brighter light line draws from the center of its first tile to its second, while both tiles briefly shift to pale green, then fade back. When another unfound word is available, the next hint switches to a different word. Your hint count is saved on this device; refreshing closes the toast and does not replay the animation.
